WATERLOO - Lavern J. Vogt, 85, of Seymour, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Continental Care Center, Seymour.

He was born Oct. 3, 1923, in Guttenberg, son of Ferdinand and Malinda Kann Vogt. He married Alice Mansfield Barta on Sept. 18, 1948, in Lancaster, Mo. She died Oct. 9, 1999.

Mr. Vogt was employed with Rath Packing Co. for 42 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II and also Korea.

Survived by a son, Steven of Plano; three daughters, Valerie (Frank) Lape of Waterloo, Daina DeBeer of Waterloo and Judy Fox of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Floyd and Eugene; and a granddaughter, Juanita Fox.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. rosary. Visitation also an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
