WATERLOO - Martha Nash, 91, died May 20, 2006, in Albuquerque, N.M.

She was born April 14, 1915, in Chicago, daughter of Sophie Fishstein and Benjamin Rubin. She married Bernard Nash in November 1944. He died in 1967

Mrs. Nash attended Wright Junior College, Northwestern University and Lewis Institute in Chicago. She received her medical technology degree at Mount Sinai Hospital and later worked at Women's and Children's Hospital in Chicago. In 1960, the family, including her father, Benjamin Rubin, moved to Waterloo and opened a Ben Franklin variety store in Evansdale. After her husband's death, she continued to operate the store with her daughter, Adrian, and later Sy, until it closed in 1993.

She was an active member in many community, political and religious organizations. She was president of the PTA in Chicago, a member of the League of Women Voters, president of Hadassah and president of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Waterloo. Martha was an avid bridge player here in Waterloo/Cedar Falls and in Corrales, N.M.

Survivors include a son, Mark (Carol Arkright); a daughter, Adrian (Sy) Nadler; two grandsons, Benjamin and Paul Nadler; and a brother, George Robin of Prairieville, La.

Preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Ada Jane.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday at Snowden House, 306 Washington St., with entrance and parking on South Street.
