CEDAR FALLS - David B. “Dave” Loonan, 76, of Cedar Falls, died at Windsor Nursing & Rehab Center, on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014.

Dave was born on Sept. 11, 1937, in Normal, Ill., son of Carroll and Emma Stewart Loonan.

He attended the Iowa School for the Blind in Vinton in his early years, where he medaled in wrestling. The Blind School was noted for its wrestling team and competing against sighted schools. Dave later attended McKinstry Elementary School in Waterloo and then graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1959.

Dave married Connie Lee Long Aug. 20, 1966, in Waterloo. She died March 21, 2012.

He worked in the maintenance department at the University of Northern Iowa for 39 years, retiring in 2000.

Dave was member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He was active in 4-H. While able, he and Connie loved to travel and tour the USA, visiting most of the national parks. Cruises were to their liking also. He was an animal lover and his favorite dog was “Red.”

He is survived by a brother, Gary (Gerri) Loonan of Huntley, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Art) Weltzin of Waterloo; four nieces and a nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Memorial services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Locke Funeral Home, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo. The family will greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at the funeral home, where a rosary will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Cancer Society.
