Obituary for James "Scott" Gleason

A husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend. Scott went to heaven on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, after suffering a stroke.

Scott was born on July 16, 1961, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Alonzo “Lon” Gleason and Nancy “Nan” Gleason Benton. He lit up every room he entered from the day he was born. Scott graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1979, and the University of Northern Iowa in 1984.

In 1995, Scott met the love of his life, Alison (Strom). Their ‘together’ started with a chance meeting and neither one ever looked back. Scott and Alison have three beautiful children, Ben, Charlie and Lucy. Scott loved them fiercely, played with them like a friend, supported them in whatever activities they chose, and taught them firmly but gently.

Scott was greeted in heaven by his father, Lon; grandparents; and uncles.

Missing him more than words can describe are his wife, Alison; children, Ben, Charlie, Lucy; mom, Nan (Bob); sisters, Ann (Phil) Swisher, Jane (John) Swieter; niece, Amy (Amy) Swisher; nephews Paul Swisher (fiancée Mariah), Jens Swieter; in-laws, Gerry and Barb Strom; sisters-in-law, Nene (Brent) Kuhl, Sara (Joel) Johnson; nieces, Hanna and Hailey Kuhl, Tayler Johnson; and countless relatives and friends.

Scott adored his family, grabbing every opportunity to spend time with them at the cabin up North, on the river, in Red Wing, in Iowa, at home in Edina, or wherever circumstances brought them together.

Friends were no different – Scott cherished old friendships and embraced new friendships; being a friend of Scott’s was a forever thing. He loved his GOOF group, his annual trips to Walker, MN for the Eel Pout Festival, and captaining his pontoon for hundreds of trips up and down the St. Croix River.

Everyone. Loved. Scott. He was the guy who cared deeply for others, the life of any party, the guy who could fix everything, the guy who had all the toys and tools, the guy you could always count on for anything and everything. Scott continued to give after his death by donating the gift of life to others. That was Scott – always giving whatever he had, never asking. He’s the guy who showed the rest of us how to be good people.

Visitation, Thursday, September 4, 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Normandale Lutheran Church. A celebration of Scott’s life will be held Friday, September 5, 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Rd, Edina.

An additional visitation will be held Saturday, September 6, 12:00 to 3:00 PM at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls, IA. Graveside service Saturday, September 6, 3:30 PM at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls, IA.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Scott’s children are preferred.
