WATERLOO - Raymond Eugene "Butch" Sonksen, 72, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home from lung cancer.

He was born Feb. 7, 1942, in Waterloo, son of Erwin and Ardella Petitt Sonksen. He married Faith H. Cerwinske in 1965 in Preston, Minn.

Ray received his GED from Hawkeye Community College in 2000 and had worked for John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 35-plus years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where he was honored as Man of the Year in 2009, served on the finance committee, as trustee chairman, usher and president of the Men's Club from 2003 until 2010. He was a member of the board of directors of the Izaak Walton League from 1986 to 1990, and was active in Boy Scouts serving as Scout Master of Troops 11 and 27, earning the Wood Badge in 1986.

Survived by his wife; a son, Scott of Waterloo; a daughter, Colette Weber of Dunkerton; two granddaughters, Alyssa (Nathan Kerns) Sonksen of Cedar Falls and Jhenna Weber of Dunkerton; and four brothers, Larry (Joann) of Hastings, Mich., Jim (Sharon) of Evansdale, Terry (Connie) of Johnston and Steve of Marshalltown.

Preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Connie Sonksen; and a brother, Denny.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church roof fund or Cedar Valley Hospice.
