CEDAR FALLS - William J. Denning Jr., 84, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, March 10, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following a stroke.

He was born Dec. 20, 1923, in Story City, son of William J. and Margaret M. Foes Denning. He married Helen June Brown; she died in 1949. He married Doris M. Havig on June 24, 1950, in Nashua. She died April 9, 2005.

Mr. Denning served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was employed as a machine operator with John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring in 1987.

Survived by four daughters, Vicki (Tom) Phelan of St. Louis, Mo., Cynthia (Guy) Sorensen of Gloucester, Va., Julie (Rich) Driscoll of Evansdale and LuAnn (Alton) Dempsey of Old Town, Fla.; two stepsons, Michael (Sharon) Brunner of Kansas City, Kan., and Richard (Gloria) Brunner of Toterville; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Alice Gentry and Norma Jean Meehan.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Chuck; and three sisters, Margaret Quisenberry, Sally Morrison and Etta Mae.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home, and also an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorial fund will be designated at a later date.
