William Benjamin Smalling, 72, of 733 Walnut Street, died in his home about midnight Saturday. Death was caused by complications incident to advanced age.

He was born June 25, 1877, in Pittsburg, Kan., the son of Robert Allen and Adeline Dunkle Smalling.

He was married Oct. 18, 1933, In Cedar Rapids, Ia., to Etta Bates He came to Waterloo from Glenn Dive, Mont., 33 years ago and was in the insurance business here.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Frederick Leonard Smalling, Spokane, Wash.; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Davis, Arlington, Va.; one brother, Charles Max Smalling, Ash Grove, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Roy Daniels, Ash Grove, and Mrs. Judie Lansberry, Berkeley, Cal.

The body is at Kearns Garden chapel where funeral arrangements are pending.
