On June 20, 2014 John Allan Schmidt, a Senior Financial Advisor and Wealth Management Specialist, passed away at the tender age of 67 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2011, a disease marked by the scarring of lung tissue, John bravely battled this illness throughout its inception up through and including his time at Hospice of the Valley.

Born in Waterloo, Iowa on November 4, 1946, John attended High School in Janesville, Iowa and played football for the Wildcats. Upon graduating in 1964,

John joined the United States Air Force Security Service (USAFSS) earning the rank of Sergeant where he performed clandestine operations for the National Security Agency (NSA) and other branches of the U.S. Government during the Vietnam War. Stationed throughout Vietnam, Japan and the U.S., John received an honorable discharge from the USAFSS in 1970.

Having secured a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Northern Iowa, John then became the youngest partner, and later principal, of a regional Illinois CPA firm. In 1982 he founded his very own CPA firm in Phoenix, Arizona which later merged with Larson Allen due to the tremendous success of the firm. A skilled financial advisor with unwavering integrity, John transitioned into and enjoyed a stinguished 35 year career providing trusted investment advice to global clientele while working for such prominent companies as Piper Jaffray, Wachovia Securities, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and ultimately UBS.

An avid fly fisherman and Texas Longhorn fan, he relished casting in international waters with close friends and watching college football on the big screen. A man of faith, John played a prominent role in the formation and operation of North Chapel, a community bible church located in Fountain Hills, and appreciated time spent ensuring the church’s success as well as the delivery of its message. John’s true passion though was spending quality time with family who adored and admired him, and whom he loved so much. Selfless, John consistently put the needs of others before his very own while his wit, wisdom and contagious smile were a cornerstone of every-day life regardless of circumstance. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, John effortlessly touched and forever changed the hearts of countless individuals and for that, we can merely say “Thank You” as The Lord is blessed to have received such a truly, truly special soul.

John is survived by his brother Jim (wife Pam), sister Linda and wife Carol Schmidt, daughters Laurinda Karston, Christine McConnell and Marlene Ruggeri, nephew Brock Schmidt (wife Emily), and grandchildren Isaac, Jude, Amber and Alex.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of the Valley are appreciated and may be addressed to: Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.
