DUNKERTON -- John Francis Ortner, 89, of Dunkerton, died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center, La Porte City.

He was born Dec. 24, 1924, in rural Dunkerton, son of Matthew and Margaret Brown Ortner. On Nov. 4, 1953, he married Dorothy Irene Weber at St. Francis Catholic Church - Barclay, rural Dunkerton; she preceded him in death.

Following graduation from Dunkerton High School, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his return home he farmed and worked at Rath Packing Co. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church - Barclay.

Survived by four daughters, Sharon (Michael) Woodward of Marion, Monica Ortner of Waterloo, and Veronica (Michael) Eldridge and Rose (Norman “Buddy”) Scarborough, both of Dunkerton; two sons, Leo of Dunkerton and Jerome (Lynn) of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard of Jesup; and two sisters, Helen (Ralph) Weber of Raymond and Mary Knebel of Jesup.

Preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons; three sisters, Kathleen Sorenson, Dorothy Youngblut and Delores Kimmel; and an infant brother, Robert.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church - Barclay, rural Dunkerton, with burial in the church cemetery at a later date. Military rites will be conducted by Peter Kress American Legion Post 636 of Dunkerton. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Jesup, with a 4 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. Francis Catholic Church - Barclay.
