CEDAR FALLS - Harold R. Backerman, 92, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at his home.

He was born July 6, 1913, in Herman, Minn., son of Herman and Ida Davis Backerman. He married Gwendolyn Johnson Sept. 2, 1937, in Ehler.

Mr. Backerman served in the U.S. Army from October 1931 to July 1934 in the Philippines. He was employed at John Deere and Co., as an engineer and retired Sept. 21, 1973, after 39 years of employment.

Survived by his wife; two sons, David (Rolene) of Hope Mills, N.C., and Ernest (Jill) of Seneca, S.C.; a daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Trunnell of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Jim (Ellen) Trunnell, Katie (Bill) Heubner, Tyler Trunnell, Megan Trunnell, Jeffrey Backerman and Cheryl (Kevin) Patrick; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey and Charles, both of Cedar Falls; and a sister, Margaret Holm of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by his parents; and twin brothers, James and John.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, Waterloo, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Full military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorial fund will be established.
