WATERLOO - LeRoy Melvin Schaffer, 78, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

He was born Aug. 15, 1935, in Minneapolis, son of Joseph Melvin and Luverne Geraldine Alderman Schaffer. On Feb. 16, 1959, he married Sherleen Kay Norte in Minnesota; she preceded him in death.

LeRoy worked for Waterloo Steel until they closed, and then Bruns Machines, Cedar Falls, until his retirement.

Survived by three sons, Alan (Kimberly) of Troy, Ill., Steven (Beverley) of Belleville, Ill., and Todd (Lisa) of Cibolo, Texas; two daughters, Sindy (Scott) Horn of Grand Island, Neb., and Laura Weber of Raymond; 10 grandchildren, Marcus (Beth) Schaffer, Erin (Richard) King, Sonya Harper, Christopher (Ashley) Harper, Dominique Schaffer, Autumn Schaffer, Randi (David) Rahn, Mitchell (Jamie) Horn, Nicholas (Sara) Weber and Daniel Weber; 12 great-grandchildren, Memphis Schaffer, Owen King, Audrey King, Shane Harper, Mackenzie Harper, Austin Harper, Logan Harper, Tanner Harper, Brodi Thompson, London Thompson, Haydn Horn, and one on the way; a brother, Lloyd (Barbara) Schaffer of Waterloo; a sister, Linda Corcoran of Bellevue, Neb.; a stepbrother, Ralph (JoAn) Emerson of Waterloo; and a stepsister, Karen (David) Chilcote of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gary John; two stepsisters, Joan Weltzin and Jean Even; a brother-in-law, Joseph Corcoran; and a son-in-law, Ronald Weber.

Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, with burial in Garden of Memories.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to American Cancer Society.
