EVANSDALE - Karen Roberts, 71, of Bedford, formerly of Evansdale, La Porte City and Shell Rock, died at home Sunday, May 25, 2014.

She was born Nov. 23, 1942, in Parkersburg, daughter of Pearl and George Rops. She married John Roberts on May 28, 1961; he died Sept. 13, 2010.

Karen graduated in 1960 from Waterloo East High School. She worked as a nurse's aide while in La Porte City, farmed south of Shell Rock, owned and operated a dairy farm near Highlandville, worked at North Winneshiek School as a board secretary, owned the Armory Bookstore in Decorah, worked as board secretary at Clarke Community School and then Marion School District, and retired from State Savings Bank, Bedford.

Survived by three daughters, Linda (Tom) Throckmorton, Susan (Jeremy) Swartz and Nancy (James) Murphy; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Lee (Linda) and Paul (Janet) Rops, and Gary Mitchell; and two sisters, Roseann (Mike) Spooner and Pam (Dan) Schmitz.

Preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Charles and Larry Mitchell.

Celebration of Life services were Thursday at Ritchie Funeral Home, Bedford.
