WATERLOO - Joseph E. Butler, 85, of Waterloo, died Friday, May 30, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital.

He was born June 8, 1928, in Whittemore, son of James and Loretta Reilly. He married Barbara Korey on Sept. 3, 1951, at St. Paul’s Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport.

Joseph was a machinist with John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry in Japan.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Michael (Michele) of New Hartford and Joseph of Missoula, Mont.; two daughters, JoAnn (Paul) McIntee of St. Cloud, Fla. and Barbara (Jay) Gaard of Cedar Falls; a son-in-law, Dan (Lesley) Bauer of New Richmond, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jo Bauer; a son, James P.; two brothers, Thomas and Patrick; and three sisters, Rose Kirby, Anna Mae Ballou and Helen Quinnan.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where military rites will be directed by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 until 6 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 5:30 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.
