JANESVILLE - Earl S. Spencer, 81, of Janesville, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at the Martin Center, Western Home Communities, Cedar Falls.
He was born Sept. 2, 1924, in Waterloo, son of Earl Barkley and Bess Shaver Spencer. He married Luanna I. Sneckenberger June 17, 1944, in Rossville, Ga.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and was past president of the El Mecca Shrine Club, El Mecca Firehouse Gang and the Roadsters. Mr. Spencer was a member of El Kahir Ceremonial Divan and was a long-time chairman of the Waterloo Shrine Circus.
He was a member of the Amvets and American Legion; and also was on the Grout Museum and Snowden House board. He was a volunteer with Goodwill Industries, served on numerous church committees and was a member of the Historical Commission of Waterloo.
Mr. Spencer was president of E.B. Spencer Engineering Company for more than 50 years.
Survived by his wife; two sons, Earl Paul (Cynthia) of Janesville and William John (Jennifer) of Forest City; a daughter, Bette Lou (Leonard "Butch") Nielsen of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, Crystal, Earl Wil, Rebecca, Emily and Adam Spencer, Amy Petersen and Jill Nielsen; and two great-grandchildren, Marcelous Mayes and Ms. Charlie Petersen.
Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Janesville United Methodist Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. public Masonic service. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to Shriners Children Hospitals or Janesville United Methodist Church.
