CEDAR FALLS - Clifford William Strein, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, from complications of Parkinsons disease.

He was born Nov. 13, 1916, in rural New Hartford, son of William and Ethel Hughes Strein. He married Doris Owens on July 31, 1943, in Boston, Mass., and they later divorced. He married Virginia ONeill on Dec. 24, 1947, in Hiawatha, Kan. She died in December 1987. He then married Nan Nelson on Oct. 14, 1988, in Waterloo.

Mr. Strein attended country school in rural New Hartford and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He farmed and custom farmed for several years near New Hartford. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the U.S. Navy in 1974 after 31 years of service to his country. He owned and operated the Silver Spur Saddle Shop, Waterloo, for many years; was a member of the Hudson and Cedar Falls American Legion Posts, the Waterloo Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. He also was a member of the Black Hawk Creek Saddle Club, the Pony Express of Iowa, the Black Hawk County Sheriffs Department Equestrian Posse and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was a 4-H horse judge for many years.

Clifford was much loved by his entire family and was known as "Papa" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Charles (Janice) of Outting, Minn.; two daughters, Sandra Kritenbrink of Valparaiso, Ind., and Rhonda (Joe) Thrush of Apache Junction, Ariz.; three stepsons, Mark (Patty) Nelson of Cedar Rapids, Phillip (Cheryl) Nelson of Frankfort, Kan., and Stacey Nelson of Cedar Falls; two stepdaughters, Georgia Toma of Cedar Rapids and Lynne Parmenter of Marion; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Hauran of Pequot Lakes, Minn., and Gladys Strein of Mareno Valley, Calif.

Preceded in death by his parents; a son, Eugene; two granddaughters; and a brother, Al.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. His casket will be transferred to Oak Hill Cemetery, New Hartford, by Heritage Farms horse-drawn hearse. Military committal rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, and for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Cedar Falls Municipal Band.
