DUNKERTON -- Vernon C. “Vern” Happel, 86, formerly of the Dunkerton and Waterloo area, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Denver Sunset Home, Denver, of natural causes.

He was born March 22, 1928, in rural Waterloo, son of William and Dorothy Poock Happel. He married Betty E. Eilers on Aug. 16, 1963, at Trinity Reformed Church, Allison.

Vern was employed by Rath Packing Co. until it closed in 1984. In addition, he was a farmer in the Dunkerton area until retiring in 2008. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army of the Korean Conflict. He volunteered several years at Allen Hospital and was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Sherry L. Happel of Lansing, Kan., and Lori (Al) Happel-Jarratt of Cannon Falls, Minn.; a sister, Donna Falk of Cedar Falls; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Happel of Denver.

Preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, LeRoy, William and Richard; and five sisters, Elda Warneka, Hilda Meyer, Esther Spooner, Dorothy Holdiman and Anna Gielau.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bennington Township, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Garden View Chapel, Waterloo, and an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Vern enjoyed the many family vacations.
