WATERLOO - Vernon H. Marsch, 75, died Aug. 22, 2001, at Friendship Village Medical Center from complications of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

He was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Waterloo, son of Louie and Emma Marsch. He married Lois Thompson on May 7, 1950.

Mr. Marsch graduated from West High School and entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Feb. 8, 1944. He served as a Field Telephone Man in Communication in World War II and saw duty at Iwo Jima and the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. He was discharged May 11, 1946.

Vern worked for U S West in different positions until his retirement in 1986 when he was in charge of the installation and repair of pay phones for northeast Iowa. He was a member of Waterloo Elks Lodge No. 290, Waterloo Optimist Club, Martin Lodge No. 624 AF&AM, 32 Degree Scottish Rite and El Kahir Shrine.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Cynthia Wilson of Springfield, Mo., and Deborah and her husband Martin Raecker of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Raecker, Angela and her husband Jeff Hoskins, Bradford and Jessica Wilson; and two great-grandchildren, Maddison and MacKinzie Hoskins.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Craig; his parents; a brother, Robert Marsch; a sister, Darlene Jacklin; and twin brother and sister, Paul and Pauline.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Friendship Village, Cedar Valley Hospice or Alzheimer's Association.
