Thomas Lynn Smith, 59, of New Hartford, Iowa passed away on Friday, April 1, 2005, at his residence in New Hartford, Iowa, of lung cancer.

Tom was born on February 18, 1946, the son of William and Loretta (Patterson) Smith in Jennings, Louisiana. He graduated from Jennings High School in 1965. In 1966, he joined the Air Force, serving 10 years in aircraft control. Tom also served 10 years in the U.S. Army National Guard with Troop D 1/194th Air Calvary at Waterloo, Iowa. On June 22, 1968, he was united in marriage to Elaine Ann Dennis at the United Methodist Church in New Hartford, Iowa. She died on March 1, 1998. Tom enjoyed being a tool maker and lead man at Viking Pump, where he worked for 28 years. On May 22, 2001, he was united in marriage to Eloise (Kim) Sommerfelt Weigel in Parkersburg, Iowa.

He was a member of the International Association of Machinists, Local 1728 and was also a member of the Amvets, Post 49 of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Tom enjoyed hunting and target shooting.

Survivors are his wife, Eloise (Kim) Smith of New Hartford, Iowa; his parents; three children, Kelly (Elaine) Smith of Dike, Iowa, Chad (Sherry) Smith of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Rebecca Dawn Smith of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two stepchildren, Kaci (Kai) Spande of Midland, Michigan and LeRoy Joe Bean Jr. of Waterloo, Iowa; three grandchildren, Chyanne, Gunner and Alexsis Smith, six stepgrandchildren, Jade Bean, Madison and Devon Spande and Jacob, Hannah and Haley Brookman; sister, Barbara (J) Gilbert of Whittier, North Carolina; brother, Dale (Cheryl) Smith of Jennings, Louisiana; his first wife's father, PaPa Joe Dennis of New Hartford, Iowa; eight nieces and 10 nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his late wife's mother, Eunice Stirling Dennis and by his father-in-law, Ernie Sommerfelt.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in New Hartford, Iowa, with Pastor Sarah L. Darter officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in New Hartford, Iowa, on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the family, PO Box 4, New Hartford, Iowa 50660, the Cancer Treatment Center or to Cancer Research. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home of Waverly is in charge of arrangements.
