WATERLOO - Harry G. Helgesen, 71, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Robin Johnson Hospice, Dallas, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

He was born Aug. 4, 1942, in Valley Stream, N.Y., son of the late Harry W. and Winifred Helgesen.

Helgesen was a retired captain of the Waterloo Police Department.

Survived by two sisters, Barbara VanSchaick and Carolyn Napolitano of Charlotte; a brother, Christopher (Wendy) of Massapequa, N.Y.; a grandnephew, Lucas, and grandniece, Chloe, with whom he spent much of his time; and several nieces and nephews.

Services: Carolina Funeral Service and Cremation Center was in charge of arrangements.

Harry proudly served his community for 35 years. He was affectionately called "Captain" by his family and friends.
