WATERLOO - Dr. David Gordon Wilson, 62, of Memphis, Tenn., died at home Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

He was born April 13, 1951, in Mason City, son of Wayne C. and Doreen M. Curtis Wilson. He married Betty "Knight" Mathis in December 1997 and they later divorced.

David graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1969, and received numerous degrees from colleges in Columbia, Mo., Lawrence, Kan., and Memphis, including a PhD in Slavic languages and literatures. He played various instruments with the "Blarney Fife" band, which recorded the album "Idlewild Waltz." He retired from Kingsbury High School, Memphis, where he taught English as a Second Language.

Survived by his mother; four brothers, Curtis (Linda) and Paul (Diane), both of Cedar Falls, and Randy (Loretta) and Bobby, both of Waterloo; a sister, Mary (Mike) Geiger of Wichita, Kan.; and many nephews and nieces.

Preceded in death by his father; and his former wife.

Services: 1 p.m. May 10, followed by coffee and cake at Grace Lutheran Church, Waterloo. His body was cremated.

Dr. David loved Celtic and Appalachian traditional music. He also also very passionate about books, especially old science fiction novels.
