Melvin A. Schares Jr., 54, of rural Independence, died at home Saturday, April 19, 2014.

He was born Feb. 9, 1960, in Waterloo, son of Melvin A. and Norma L. Weber Schares.

Melvin was a 1978 graduate of Jesup High School, Jesup. He worked on road crews for 20 years and then with Youngblut Construction. He most recently did metal recycling.

Survived by a son, Curtis (Samantha) of Jesup; a daughter, Kaitlynn Schares of Safford, Ariz.; a grandson; his mother of La Porte City; four sisters, Deb (Gary) Jacobsen of Jesup, Lori Schares of Houston, Doris Bruch of Marion and Judy Schares of Waterloo; three brothers, John (Karla), Scott and and Roger (Julie), all of Jesup; and a special friend, Vickie.

Private memorial services were April 20 at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence.
