WATERLOO - Howard Frank Austin, 90, of Waterloo, died at home Sunday, April 1, 2007 of natural causes.

He was born March 11, 1917, in Waterloo, son of Jess and Hattie Westendorf Austin. On Aug. 12, 1950, he married Marguerite Johnson in Waterloo. She died in December 1985.

Mr. Austin attended Waterloo East High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 151st Infantry and fought in the Philippines. Over the years he worked as a brick layer for the Marquart Block Co. and owned and operated a resort in Ontario, Canada, for more than 35 years.

Survived by his companion, Gwen Venter of Waterloo; a niece, Darlene Wells of Cedar Falls; Gwen's daughters, Vicki (John) Abels and Teri (Steward) Daniels; great nieces and nephews, Barney and Jean Hilbert of Waverly, Jeff and Kim Hilbert of Cedar Falls, and Susie and Rose Marie of Louisiana.

Preceded in death by an infant son, Robert; and a brother, Delbert.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, with private inurnment at a later date. There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Howard had many fond memories of his time in Canada. Later in life he was blessed to have the companionship and friendship of Gwen Venter.
