Mr. Richard "Duff" Nauman, age 80, a resident at the Iowa Veterans Home since 1999, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, 2005 at the Veterans Home.

Funeral services have been set for 1:30 p.m. Friday at Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck. Friends may call at the Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home today from 6 to 8 p.m.; his family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be flag-folding ceremonies at the funeral home by the American Legion.

He was born in Waterloo on Jan. 29, 1925, the son of Henry and Sadie Miller Nauman.

Raised and educated in Waterloo, he graduated from Waterloo West High School. He then attended Drake University and played basketball. In 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific until 1946.

On May 31, 1947, in Waterloo, he was united in marriage to Mary V. Allbee.

They lived in Arizona where he attended school and came back to Marshalltown in 1950 when he took over the Gallup Insurance Agency; it then became the Nauman Insurance Agency. Duff retired in 1999 and moved to the Iowa Veterans Home.

His memberships were in the Elks Lodge, VFW, American Legion, Marshalltown Country Club, and a former Masonic Lodge member and the ZaGaZig Shrine.

Survivors include three sons and a daughter, Matthew (Deirdre) Nauman of Portland, Ore.; Richard (Sandy) Nauman of Des Moines; Thomas Nauman of Des Moines; and Beverly, Mrs. Mark Best of San Francisco, Calif. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Molly Nauman, Diana Best, Josh Nauman, Maggie Nauman, Jackson Best and Emma Nauman.

Preceding him in death were his parents and an aunt, Belle Miller.
