WATERLOO -- Virgil Edward Hesse, 84, of Waterloo, died at home Wednesday, April 2, 2014.

He was born March 14, 1930, in Bremer County, son of Edward and Elenore Alvina Eickelberg Hesse. He married Lois Mae Hartman on Oct. 3, 1954, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger; she died July 10, 2008.

Virgil graduated from Denver High School in 1948 and had served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He farmed in Black Hawk County and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Denver.

Survived by four daughters, Sue Burnell of Waterloo, Deb (Skip) Smith and Carol (Dan) Klein, both of Cedar Falls, and Linda (Paul) Judd of Adel; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marge (Elmer) Boehm of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Verona (Vern) Hines.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Denver, with inurnment at a later date in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the Local N.E.I.3.A. which helps support the Denver Senior Citizens lunches.
