Carl L. "Jack" Rice, 84, of 89 Newell St., died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 1989, at Covenant Medical Center at Kimball Avenue of natural causes.

He was born June 28, 1905, in Benton County, son of Charles William and Martha Ellen Landers Rice. He married Marie I. Wilmott Nov. 18, 1943, in Galena, Ill. She died Nov. 28, 1957.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and had been employed at John Deere for 26 years, retiring in 1967.

He was the originator of the Melody Boys Band.

Survivors include a brother, Clement of Pipestone, Minn.; a sister, lola Stocks of Evansdale; and Anna R. Beatty, who cared for him for many years.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Loren, Roscoe and Irven; and four sisters, Mable Miller, Bertha Jackson, Levetta Westcott and Ruby Schoonover.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Parrott and Wood Funeral Home with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman Post 138, American Legion, and Waterloo Post 1623 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. today, where the Disabled American Veterans will have a farewell memorial at 6 p.m., and 9 a.m. until services Monday.
