CEDAR FALLS -- Donald D. "Don” Ackman, 85, of Cedar Falls, died March 3 at Western Home Communities Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center.

He was born April 6, 1928, in Edgewood, son of Herman H. and Martha Geneva Waldo Ackman. He married Joann M. Luense on June 16, 1951, in Greeley.

Don served as staff sergeant in U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Dubuque and a master's degree from the University of Iowa. He was employed as a teacher and eventually a principal for 11 years in the Jesup school system, and then as an elementary school principal for 26 years in the Cedar Falls school system, retiring in 1993.

Survived by his wife; four sons, Terry (Karen Wolfe) of Rochester, Minn., Scott of Long Beach, Calif., Mark (Amy) of Cedar Rapids and Brian of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, Aaron, Ian, Sierra and Emma Ackman; and two sisters-in-law, Roberta Ackman of Cedar Rapids and Geneva Ackman of Brookings, S.D.

Preceded in death by four brothers, Bruce, Carl, Hubert and Keith; and a sister at birth.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls, preceded by an hour of visitation. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the church, the Western Home Foundation, Cedar Valley Hospice or East Central Iowa Alzheimer's Association.

Don served as a leader with the Boy Scouts of America for many years, in the Cub Scout, Webelo, and Boy Scout organizations. He received the Silver Beaver award for the impact on the lives of the youths and the service given to the council.
