Gaylin F. Morgan (1938-2005)

Gaylin F. Morgan, age 66, of Jefferson, Wis., passed away on Jan. 22, 2005, at Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital in Fort Atkinson, Wis.

He was born on Nov. 3, 1938, in Cedar Falls, son of Paul and Beulah (Butler) Morgan. He married Carol Wedl on Oct. 7, 1967, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Jefferson.

A business and community leader known for his gentle nature, creative ideas and wry wit, Morgan was former president of Morgan & Myers, one of Wisconsin's largest and most pre-eminent public relations firms. He was widely recognized for his business success during his professional career and devoted enormous energy to a variety of civic causes both before and during his active retirement.

The Jefferson Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year in 1988. He served on both the Jefferson County Economic Development Corp. and was on the board of the Economic Development Corp. for the city of Jefferson. He was a founding member of the Jefferson Community Foundation and served on the board of Rainbow Hospice. He was on the board of Premier Bank for seven years.

Morgan enjoyed life fully, was an avid golfer and played clarinet and saxophone in the Jefferson American Legion Band. He was also the recording secretary for the Maxwell Street Marching and Frog Leg Society.

Morgan formed Gaylin F. Morgan & Associates in Wauwatosa, Wis., in 1973 and moved the firm to Jefferson County in 1976. In 1982, he then co-founded Morgan & Myers, with partners Gary Myers and Carol Knox. The public relations firm specialized in agricultural accounts and was named to Inc. magazine's list of 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in 1987.

Morgan's work on behalf of his clients frequently was recognized with industry awards. Upon his retirement, the National Agri-Marketing Association named him the agency Ag Communicator of the Year in 1998.

A dedicated 1962 graduate of Iowa State University, Morgan served on the Alumni Board of the Greenlee School of Journalism and is a member of the Order of the Knoll at Iowa State. He served in the United States military as a Marine from 1962-1964.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; two daughters, Kimberly Morgan of Kansas City, Mo., and Gaylee (Stephen Ruszczyk) Morgan of Oak Park, Ill.; a son, Curtis "Charlie" Morgan of Minneapolis; a granddaughter, Eleanor Ruszczyk; his father, Paul Morgan, and his stepmother, Irene Kramer, of Cedar Falls; six sisters, Joyce Illian of Des Moines, Michelle (Craig) Neal of Pittsford, N.Y., Diann (Dean) Peyton of Des Moines, Dinah (Dick) Faust of Mauston, Wis., Lorraine (John) Ward of Coon Valley, Wis., Paula (Bill) O'Brien of Galveston, Texas; two brothers, Larry (Rae) Morgan of Iowa City and Dennis (Jana) Morgan of Longview, Wash.; and a stepbrother, Jerry (JoAnn) Kramer of Cedar Falls.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Beulah; a sister, Janice Baumgartner; a stepsister, Kathy Kramer; and a stepbrother, John Kramer.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. Thomas Coyle officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Schneider-Michaelis Funeral Home in Jefferson and then again on Friday morning at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.

The family suggests memorials be given to the Jefferson Community Foundation, the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or Jefferson Rainbow Hospice.
