Services for A. J. (Speck) Holmes, 78, of 712 W. 6th St. will be I p.m. Monday at Nottger-Schoof Funeral Home with the Rev. Doyle Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery [Cedar Falls]. Friends may call aft er 7 p.m. Friday. He died Thursday morning of a heart attack.

Mr. Holmes was born Oct. 17, 1888, in Freeport, Ill., the son of John C. and Franceilia Rogers Holmes. He married Elesa C. Schatz Sept. 15, 1923, in the Little Brown Church at Nashua.

He was a member of Bethany Shrine No. 9; past Master of Lodge 65, AF and AM, Cedar Falls Chapter of Eastern Star. He came to Cedar Falls in 1925. A veteran or World War I, he was an employe of Northwestern Bell for 40 years until retirement in 1953. He was a member of Pioneer Assn. of the Bell Telephone Co.

Survivors include his widow; two daughters: Lola at home and Mrs. Larue (June) Bentz of Clinton; two brothers, Charles of Mt. Pleasant and Judd of Independence; a sister, Mrs. Ruthe Hall of Independence; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded by parents and-four brothers.
