Funeral services for Leon A. O'Brien of Waterloo, IA, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 1996, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery with Oppold-Hagarty Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He died Saturday, December 21, 1996, at Allen Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Leon was born February 1, 1920, in Bluffton Township, the son of Andrew and Kathryn Fitzgerald O'Brien. He married Loretta Jirak on February 27, 1946 in Cresco.

He was employed by the REA as a lineman for 15 years. Then he and his family moved to Waterloo where he was a press operator at Waterloo Industries for 27 years, retiring in February 1985.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Tim of New Orleans; five daughters, Mary Thomas of Fayetteville, AR, Kathleen Fettkether of Ankeny, Noreen Purcell and Annette O'Brien, both of Waterloo, and Monica Nagel of London, England; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, twin Leone Bouska of Protivin, Marie O'Shea of Ridgeway and Alice Rand of Madison, NJ.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene O'Brien.
