CEDAR FALLS - Joyce Jean Hornby, 73, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Torrington, Wyo., died Aug. 16, 2005.

She was born Aug. 20, 1931, on the family homestead near Table Mountain, Wyo., daughter of Fred and Pauline Benzel. She married Donald Hornby in Torrington, and they later divorced.

Ms. Hornby graduated from Huntley High School in 1949; earned a degree in education from Northwestern College, Minneapolis, and a bachelors degree in education from University of Minnesota. She was an elementary teacher in Minneapolis and at Goshen County School System in Wyoming in the 1960s. She earned a masters degree in education in Greeley, Colo., then worked toward a doctorate in education from the University of Wyoming. She was an associate professor at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, where she also served as student teacher coordinator. She returned to Wyoming in the early 1980s and served as principal at Valley Christian School, Torrington, until retiring. She also authored several textbooks.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Joy Hornby Solon of Waldorf, Md.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Hanna Van Mark of Torrington and Barbara Ann Johnson of Covington, Ga.; five brothers, Sterling Benzel of La Pine, Ore., Robert Benzel of Phoenix, Paul Benzel of New Hall, Calif., Daniel Benzel of Roseville, Calif., and George Benzel of Charlotta, Calif.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Roy Benzel; and a sister, Adeline.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Thursday at Prairie Lakes Church, Cedar Falls. Burial was in Wyoming on Aug. 22.
