WATERLOO - Thelma Beatrice Ness Winter, 100, of Waterloo, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Covenant Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 20, 1907, in York Township, in southern Minnesota, daughter of George and Adabell Cheney Ness. She married Carlton Louis Winter on June 18, 1939, in Cresco. He died Jan. 15, 2000.

Thelma attended the University of Northern Iowa for two years and graduated from the University of Iowa. After her marriage, she and her husband operated Winter's Grocery Stores in Wilton, Atalissa and West Liberty. They moved to Waterloo in 1959 and opened the first Ben Franklin Store in the first shopping center in Waterloo - the Villa Shopping Center on La Porte Road. In 1961, they opened Logan Plaza Ben Franklin Store; in 1963, Kimball Plaza Ben Franklin Store; in 1965, Lyndale Plaza Ben Franklin Store in Mason City; in 1969, Ben Franklin Store in New Hampton and Coast to Coast Store in Logan Plaza, Waterloo; in 1971, downtown Waterloo Ben Franklin and Barberio Cheese Shop in the Crossroads Mall. They retired in 1981.

Survivors include a niece, Linda (Richard) Vahrenkamp of Lyons, Colo.; a nephew, Rodney (Fancy) Lindlief of Loveland, Colo.; nephew, Carlton Ness of Lime Springs; two grandnieces, Crystal Lindlief of Aurora, Colo., and Carlee Lindlief of Durango, Colo.; and great-grandniece, Jada Lyn Chapin of Durango.

Preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Harry Ness; and a sister, Lauretta Lindlief.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Valley Community Church, with a 1:30 p.m. graveside service in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and continue for one hour before services at the church on Thursday.
