WATERLOO - Richard J. "Dick" Klein, 87, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Rosewood Estate of complications from dementia.

He was born Aug. 3, 1921, in Waterloo, son of Frank Henry and Genevieve Margaret McGarvey Klein. He married Julia "Judy" Ann Humiston on Aug. 10, 1943, in Los Angeles. She died Sept. 12, 1993.

Mr. Klein was a sergeant with the U.S. Army, 81st Infantry "Wildcats" Division during World War II. He served in the South Seas, Philippines and the occupation of Japan. He was a supervisor at John Deere's service parts division. He retired from John Deere in March 1984 after 43 years of service.

Survived by a son, Rick "RJ" (Susan) of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Mike of Cedar Falls and Chris of Waterloo; and two sisters, Betty Wyatt of Fontana, Calif., and Joan Dane of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife; six brothers, Bill, Carlton "Mike", Bob, Dwight, John and Phillip; and four sisters, Carolyn Ann Kleinmeyer, Mary Catherine Durnin, Genevieve "Miriam" Bradford and Julie Blanchard.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with entombment in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 5 p.m. 4th Degree Knights of Columbus rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the East Central Iowa Alzheimer's Association or to the church.
