WATERLOO - Henry M. Rice, 86, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born March 22, 1922, in Hawesville, Ky., son of Hubert and Isola Freeman Rice. He married Ruby Franzenburg on Aug. 27, 1944, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Keystone.

Mr. Rice graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1940. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He had been employed at Rath Packing Co., John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works and then with Sears for 27 years, until his retirement.

Survived by his wife; a son, Michael (Barb) of Eagan, Minn.; two daughters, Marla (Russell) Betts of Waterloo and Marcia (Michael) Daly of Raleigh, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeffrey Rice, Katherine, Elizabeth, Julia and Troy Betts and Noelle, Michael and Eliza Daly; and a great-grandson, Josh.

Preceded in death by a brother, Earl; and a sister, Mary Josephine.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial at 1:30 p.m. in Keystone Cemetery, Keystone. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Henry loved traveling, and his passion was working with wood, mainly restoring old furniture and also wood carving.
