WATERLOO - Alfred J. Herbsleb, 99, of Waterloo, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at Valley Grande Manor, Weslaco, Texas, of natural causes.

He was born July 26, 1910, in Galena, Ill., son of Henry and Ella Roberts Herbsleb. He married Viola Melvold on Jan. 15, 1935, in Pekin, Ill. She preceded him in death Feb. 2, 2004.

Mr. Herbsleb owned his own fruit store, The American Fruit Co., in Cedar Rapids and was employed at John Deere as a power house operator, retiring after 29 and a half years of service. He and his son, Don, also built houses in Waterloo.

Survived by a son, Donald (Pat) of Weslaco; three grandchildren, Tammy (Tim) Sorenson, Steve Herbsleb and Mark (Paige) Herbsleb; and nine great-grandchildren, Joshua, Anna and Leah Sorenson, Heather, Haley and Skyler Herbsleb and Logan, Luke and Mallory Herbsleb.

Preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; two brothers, Harry and Kenneth; and three sisters, Margurite Petersen, Henrietta Homan and Cylinda King.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.

He enjoyed telling jokes and working. Most of all, Al loved his family, they were his main priority. He also wintered in southern Texas for 33 years. Al will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
