WATERLOO - Bruce LaVern Kern, 66, of Portland, Ore., formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, from complications of surgery.

He was born Nov. 7, 1938, in Waterloo, son of Richard LaVern and Marie Eveland Kern. He married Margaret "Peggy" Heronimus on July 21, 2000, in Vancouver, Wash.

Mr. Kern was employed with Miller Paint Co., Portland, for 16 years as head welder, engineer and in maintenance. He also was employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works; was a plumber in Nashua; and logged in Montana, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming for many years. He was proud to have his welding from the Beechcraft Co. of Boulder, Colo., used for the Gemini Project on the moon. He was fond of guns, fireworks, traveling and gardening. He was a hard-working, kind, gentle man.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Steven LaVern (Heidi) and Gary Allen, both of Portland, Tomas Richard (Maryanne) of Corvallis, Mont., and Bruce Duane of Lake Elsnor, Calif.; three daughters, Sandra Lynn (Scott) Amb and Wendy Marie Kern, both of Portland, and Carole Sherrei Kern of Tiffin; a stepson, Brad Allen (Charmaine) McGrew of Thornton, Colo.; three stepdaughters, Brandy Lea (Ryan) Stroeder of Golden, Colo., Julie Ann (Ryan) Oliver of Park Rapids, Minn., and Ashley Nicole Brimmer of Portland; a sister, Winnifred Goldsberry of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren, Stacey (Ian) Walerey, Stephanie (Jason) Loud, Samuel Kern, Mitchel, Michael and Mathew Amb, and Jessica Kern, all of Portland, Gary Thomas of Montana, and Kailah and Christie Kern, both of Corvallis, Mont.; eight stepgrandchildren, Miranda and Mitchel Sovich of Golden, DeVante and Alexia McGrew of Thornton, Colo., Adam and Melissa Oliver of Park Rapids, Minn., and Chris and Joe; and two great-grandchildren, Conan and Baylee Walery of Portland.

Preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Louise Ricketts; and twin daughters, Angela and Dawn Kern.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and £from noon until services Friday at the funeral home. Memorial services will be later in Portland.
