HUDSON - Bernard L. "Bernie" Jensen, 84, of Hudson, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital, Waterloo, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 31, 1929, in Hudson, son of Niels and Marie Jensen. He married Jean Jensen on April 25, 1953, in Hudson; she died Dec. 15, 2007.

Bernie graduated from Hudson High School in 1948. He retired as sales manager in 1989 from Universal Industries; served as mayor of Hudson from 1994 to 1996, 2002 to 2004 and again from 2008 to 2012; and was a member of Hudson School Board from 1968 to 1974 and president in 1973. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a boiler technician aboard the USS Mispillion and was past commander of the Hudson AMVETS Anderson Post No. 82.

Survived by two sons, Bruce (Jill) of Waterloo and Randy of Iowa City; a daughter, Sherrie (Paul) Hernandez of East Moline, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Justin, Benjamin and Nicholas Jensen, Emily, Ross and Lee Jensen, and Jeannie and Alex Hernandez; a sister, Sharon (Floyd) Appleby of Waterloo; a brother, George "Irv" (Gisela Weerts) of Surprise, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Richard (Barb) Jensen of Gilbertville; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Beck of Hudson

Preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harold, Don and an infant; and a sister, Frances Jensen

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, with burial in Hudson Cemetery, with military rites by Hudson AMVETS and U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
