GILBERTVILLE - Harold "Harry" Anthony Schares, 74, of Gilbertville, died Friday, July 4, 2008, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of congestive heart failure.

He was born July 16, 1933, in Waterloo, son of Joseph and Mary S. Welter Schares. He married Lois Mae Schaefer on Aug. 25, 1958, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville.

Mr. Schares was employed by Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, for 34 years, while also working for Gilbertville Grain and Lumber, retiring in 2000. He also was a volunteer firefighter for 43 years.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Mark (Pam) and Greg (Cindy), both of Gilbertville; five grandsons, Eric, Ryan, Cameron, Bryce and Carson, all of Gilbertville; four brothers, Ronnie (Genevieve) of Waterloo, Lester (Marge Ihde) of Gilbertville, Henry (Delores) of Washburn and Marvin (Nancy) of La Porte City; two sisters, Marcie McCardle of Independence and Marie (Gene) Hestness of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by three brothers, Norman, Earl and Elmer; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Schares and Karen Schares; three brothers-in-law, Paul Robb, Pat Rourke and Roman Schaefer.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a 4 p.m. Catholic Order of Foresters rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Don Bosco Systems or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in lieu of flowers.

Harry enjoyed farming and going to his grandson's sporting events and talking with friends.
