WATERLOO - Phelma E. Garris, 90, of Waterloo, died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

She was born July 29, 1917, in Melcher, daughter of Frank and Mary Romeo Ellis. She married Benjamin A. Garris on May 30, 1943, in Charlotte, N.C. He died Nov. 6, 2001.

Mrs. Garris graduated from Olivet Nazarene College, Kankakee, Ill. She was a teacher for 31 years and was employed by the Waterloo Community School System, teaching at many schools and retiring from McKinstry Elementary in 1988. After her retirement, she substituted for many years.

Survived by four sons, Ron (Sharon) of Waterloo, Ray (Shirley) of Washburn, Ed (Susan) of Rochester, Minn., and Bobby (Susan) of Longwood, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jeff Garris, Todd (Michelle) Garris, Anthony Garris, Jordan Garris, Shelby Garris and Sophia Garris; a great-granddaughter, Jilian Garris; and a sister, Leda Erickson of Troy, Idaho.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Connie; three grandsons, Tim (Ron and Sharon), Tory and Travis (Ray and Shirley) Garris; a brother, Roy Ellis; and an infant sister, Elizabeth Ellis.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Crossroads Community Church of the Nazarene, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Public visitation for an hour before services Monday at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to an educational fund to be established at a later date.
