Dr. R. L. Robert
Fatally Hurt in
Headon Collision

A 27-year-old Waterloo physician's body was being returned here after he was instantly killed at about 12:45 a.m. Friday in a head on automobile-truck crash just west of the -De's Moines' city limits.

Dead is Dr. Richard L. Robert, who lived with his wife and two children at 600 Hope Avenue.

Dr. Robert, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Robert, of 1252 Logan Avenue, was a practicing physician with offices in the Marsh-Place building. His father is a city councilman and well-known druggist.

His death came after he had left Omaha, Neb., to return home after being ordered to report there for a physical examination prior to receiving a commission in the army.

Ironically, Dr. Robert was told upon his arrival at Omaha that the orders were in error and that he could return to Waterloo. He had been there two weeks ago to inquire as to his status with the army.

According to authorities in Des Moines, Dr. Robert's car was demolished and he was instantly killed when it and a heavy truck collided head-on at the junction of 71st Street and Highway 6 in the capital city.

It required more than two hours to extricate his body from the twisted wreckage.

The driver of the truck, Milton Knutson of Des Moines, received a fracture of the right elbow and was hospitalized at Iowa Methodist Hospital.

Deputy sheriffs had to use acetylene torches to cut his body free from the wreckage. Dr. Robert was severely lacerated and identification required considerable time.

A former Waterloo resident, Paul Manning, who now lives in Des Moines, was telephoned by Waterloo Police Captain Quintin Parker upon request of Dr. Robert's father. Manning went to the scene of the accident and later identified Dr. Robert for authorities. Manning is a relative of Dr. Robert by marriage.

Dr. Robert was an active member of the Black Hawk County Medical Association and was an active member on the staffs of the city's three hospitals, Allen Memorial, St. Francis and Schoitz Memorial.

He was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Waterloo, the son of Mr. and Mrs, John J. Robert. He was educated at St. Mary's High School, graduating in 1941. He then went to Loras college at Dubuque, la., and was graduated in 1944. From there he attended the State University of Iowa for a year's post, graduate work. Then he enrolled in the Creighton University College of Medicine at Omaha. He was graduated from medical school in 1949.

Upon graduation he completed his internship at St. Catherine's Hospital in Omaha. In October, 1950, he returned to Waterloo and began his private practice.

He married Jane Ann Wareham, of Dubuque, on Aug. 29, 1944, in Dubuque.

While attending Creighton, he was vice-president of his class and presiding senior of Chi Epsilon of Phi Chi medical fraternity. He was also prince in the 1949 court of King Creighton.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Dickie, 4, and one daughter, Mary Maureen, 2. Also surviving are his parents, one brother, William, a student at Drake university, two sisters, Betty, at home, and Mrs. Luverne Manning, 150 Hope Avenue. A maternal grandmother Mrs. Mary Curran, 148 Hope Avenue also survives.

Funeral arrangements are pending at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home.
