[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, May 29, 2005]

Ronald "Ron" Leland Johnson, 62, of Janesville, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2005, at his residence in Janesville.

Ron was born on May 3, 1943, the son of William Leroy and Mabel (Waltz) Johnson in Spencer. He attended school in Spencer and graduated from Spencer High School in 1961. He then went to Junior College in Brainerd, Minnesota, and then SCI, State College of Iowa (now UNI).

On August 1, 1964, he was united in marriage to Pamela S. Schneckloth in Spencer.

After marriage, he worked as head of the Y Outpost (now YMCA) while continuing his education at SCI. Upon graduation from SCI in 1967, Ron began work at Orange High School. In 1968, Ron worked at Bunger Junior High until he was drafted by the United States Army and served in Vietnam.

Following his discharge, Ron worked as Head of the P.E. department at McKinstry Junior High until the early 1970s when he went to East High School. There he taught P.E. and coached baseball and basketball as well as football at the freshman through varsity levels while earning his Master's Degree from SCI.

Ron and Pam made their home in Waterloo until 1988, when they moved to Janesville. While at East High, one of the activities Ron was most proud of was his work as head of the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) from the 1980s through the 1990s. In 2000, he went on to reach even more students' lives by teaching P.E. and coaching baseball for the Janesville Consolidated School District. Ron continued to teach at Janesville and other local area schools until the time of his death.

Ron was dedicated to his family above all else. This dedication flowed over to the countless lives he touched through his work as a teacher, coach, and mentor. Ron also enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting, traveling with his family, sports and helping anyone who needed a hand. He touched so many lives in so many ways, it is impossible to quantify it in words.

Survivors are his wife, Pam of Janesville; a daughter, Robyn Johnson of Denver, Colorado; a son, Blayne Johnson of Iowa City; two brothers, Otto (Betty) Johnson of Des Moines and Jim (JoAnn) Johnson of Sioux City; four sisters, Lillie (Marv) Mathison of Bellvue, Nebraska, Leota (Vernon) Jochims of Arnolds Park, Joyce (Dewey) Ramsey of Fort Dodge and Marilyn (Elton) Wolfe of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Pat Johnson of Spencer.
