WATERLOO -- Russell B. Nelson Jr., 67, of Waterloo, formerly of White Bear Lake, Minn., died at home Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Sept. 3, 1946, in Minneapolis, son of Russell B. and Dorothy Anderson Nelson Sr. He married Marlys Paulson on Nov. 22, 1969, in Fridley, Minn.

Russell graduated from White Bear Lake High School in 1964; attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from Brown College with a degree in broadcasting. He worked for Northwestern University, St. Paul Radio, for 11 years, and KNWS Radio, Waterloo. He worked for PIPAC for 17 years and then for Advantage Administrators in marketing, retiring in 2012. Russell was ordained as a pastor in 1981 and served as interim at several area churches. He was member of Cedar Valley Community Church, Crossroads Rotary and the National Association of Health Underwriters.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Gordon of Cedar Rapids and Erik (Colleen) of Waterloo; a daughter, Laura of Alexandria, Va.; two granddaughters, Delia and Isabelle Nelson; his mother of Maplewood, Minn., a brother, Michael (Beth) of Aurora, Colo.; four sisters, Nancy (Dave) Kopesky of Maplewood, Mary (John) Helland of Tallahassee, Fla., and Susan El Eid and Sarah Brown, both of Oakdale, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his father.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Valley Community Church, with burial at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at Morningside Cemetery, Coon Rapids, Minn. Visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home and for an hour before services at the church.
