[Waterloo Daily Courier, Friday, February 17, 1893, Waterloo, Iowa]

Chauncey Mead, one of the early residents of this county, died this morning at 8:20 at his residence about 2½ miles northwest of town. He was sick only about a week, of pneumonia resulting from an attack of the grip. He would have been 79 years old next month.

He came to this county from Winnebago Co., Ills., in 1863, and lived for a number of years in Poyner Township.

He leaves three sisters here: Mrs. H. Brooks, Mrs. J. Higgins, and Mrs. M. M. Schellinger; three daughters: Mrs. David Johnson and Mrs. Free Higgins, living here, and Mrs. Benton, living in Rockton, Illinois; three sons, John and Henry living here and Arthur, who is in the regular army and stationed in New Hampshire. His second wife also survives him.

The funeral will take place next Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Mr. Mead was well known to all our people, and especially to the older residents, with whom he has lived during the development of this city and county from a frontier section to its present well settled condition. He was an hon est and upright man and had the respect of everyone.

The place for holding the funeral will be announced tomorrow.
