Jean C. Miller, 84, of Austin, Minnesota and formerly of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the Austin Medical Center.

She was born April 1, 1920 in Cedar Falls the daughter of Carl W. & M. Viola (Nolte) Miller. Jean graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1937, earned her BA degree from Iowa State Teacher’s College (U.N.I.) and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University.

She taught music in Charles City and Ames then moved to Austin as a string instructor and orchestra conductor. Jean retired from teaching in 1982 after 29 years with the Austin School District. She was a noted cellist, playing with the Iowa State Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Chamber Orchestra and the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Jean was a charter member of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, performing as recently as 1997. Her gentle spirit and abilities as both musician and teacher touched many lives.

Jean is survived by many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to First Congregational Church, Austin Symphony Orchestra, or Sacred Heart Care Center, all of Austin, Minnesota.
