[News Story- KCRG, May 18, 2008]

WATERLOO - We have new details about a weekend house fire that killed a three-year-old. Investigators say a faulty power strip sparked that fire.

It happened at 1013 Independence Avenue late Saturday Night. Grantley Ray Young, 3, died in the fire. Rodney Allen Young, 39, is in the hospital with second and third degree burns.

The woman who lived there and escaped the fire spent time inside with family members sifting through what's left. She just came out and spoke with us briefly, obviously very upset over losing her 3-year-old son.

Firefighters now say the blaze that killed Grantley Young started with a faulty power strip that shorted out in the living room. The fire and smoke woke the family but it spread quickly. The woman, Stephania Pischone Wright, 47, her brother, Rodney Young and a 5-month-old baby girl, Mariahla Owens were able to make it out of the house.

The family says the power strip was not overloaded, just faulty. Neighbors tell me they could hear the woman outside screaming and that some of them had to hold her back from the scene.

When firefighters arrived the house was completely engulfed in flames. That kept them from entering to find the little boy at first. When they did get to him, they rushed him to the ambulance where officials pronounced him dead.

"Other than the family, I don't think anyone feels worse about it than the firefighters. It's what we're here to do even though we had a less than 2 minutes response with the fire and heat conditions, it just wasn't something we were able to accomplish," said Doug Carter, Waterloo Police Chief.

Grantley Young would have been 4 in November. His Uncle, Rodney suffered serious burns and had to be air lifted to University Hospitals in Iowa City. TV9 is told his injuries are not life threatening.
