[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Thursday, January 30, 2014]

Chris Patrick Vaverka was born Jan. 9, 1952, to parents Bob and Juanita Vaverka in Waterloo. While attending East High School, Chris worked at the Waterloo Courier. After graduating in 1970 he served in the U.S. Navy for six years, where he specialized in maintaining helicopters that evacuated wounded soldiers from Vietnam. Chris returned to Waterloo and worked as a welder. Later he relocated to Kansas City and worked as a machinist. More recently health concerns resulted in a return to Waterloo to be close to his family.

Chris enjoyed gardening, cooking, building and flying model airplanes, and Biblical conversations especially with his father. Chris passed into the presence of Jesus on Saturday morning, Jan. 25, 2014, at the age of 62.

He is survived by his parents, Bob and Juanita; his wife, LaVonda; his sons, Christopher and Joseph; and his sisters, Suzann Mulnix and Janice Wyatt.

His family would like to express their most sincere appreciation to the Allen Hospital staff who preserved Chris' life multiple times over the last decade and to his lifelong friend, Jeff Doughty, for his availability at the end.

Chris is now at peace.

Services to honor Chris will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at Harvest Vineyard Church on 715 E. Fourth St.
