WATERLOO - The Rev. Richard Wayne Johnson, 80, of Waterloo, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village.

He was born April 30, 1933, in Indianola, son of Walter and Grace Catlin Johnson. He married Beverly Ann Collins on July 31, 1954, at Grandview Park Baptist Church in Des Moines. She died July 4, 2009.

He received his education from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Grandview, Moody Bible Institute, Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary and Cedarville College. The Rev. Johnson served as a pastor for First Baptist Church, New Hartford, for six years; First Baptist Church, Kasson, Minn., for 10 years; Temple Baptist Church, Lincoln, Neb., for 19 years; interim pastor in Waukon and Tipton; and Friendship Village chaplain for 10 years.

He attended Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, Waterloo. He served on various boards, including Bass Lake Baptist Camp, Whispering Cedars Baptist Camp, Denver Baptist Bible College, Cornerstone University and the GARBC State Association Boards.

Survived by two daughters, Mary Grace (Barry) Mowry of Sherwood, Mich., and Sara (Lonnie) Ostransky of Perry; five grandsons, Robert Mowry of Siloam Springs, Ark., Scott Mowry and Drew (Darlene) Ostransky, both of Denver, Colo., Sam (Leslie) Ostransky of Alexandria, Virg., and Will Ostransky of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Jasper and Tindra; and a sister-in-law, Jackee Johnson of Anaheim, Calif.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Marion Dwight “Dee” and John; a sister, Willodyne Bruzdowski.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, Waterloo, with burial in Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo.

Memorials may be directed to Friendship Village Chapel Ministries or Cedar Valley Hospice.
