WATERLOO - Dr. John E. Strong Jr., 71, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Covenant Clinic of natural causes.

He was born Nov. 13, 1936, in Boston, son of John and Agnes Delaney Strong Sr. He married Rebecca Montgomery on April 22, 1965, in Kingston, Ga.

Dr. Strong was a physician, practicing in obstetrics and gynecology in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area, and also Chicago, retiring in 1996. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.

Survived by his wife; two sons, John E. III of Cedar Falls and Jim (Sherry) of Des Moines; a daughter, Shelley (Lance) Gabnay of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Estep of Middletown, Del.; a niece, Donna Rice of Vinton; and two nephews, Matthew Estep and Donald Estep Jr., both of Middletown.

Preceded in death by a son, Bill; and a brother-in-law, Donald Estep Sr.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.
