GILBERTVILLE — Leona A. Bernard, 87, of Gilbertville, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Tripoli Nursing Home after a brief bout with cancer.

She was born Sept. 23, 1920, at her parents' home in rural Black Hawk County, daughter of John and Cecelia Kass Thome.

She married Mark G. Bernard on Oct. 13, 1943, in Gilbertville. He died Dec. 11, 1999.

Leona worked in sales for several Waterloo businesses and also farmed in the Gilbertville area with her husband.

Survivors include a son, Brendt (Jane) of Tripoli; two grandchildren, Chad (Laura) Bernard of Tripoli and Doria (Dustin) Brown of Fort Worth, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Hannah and Isabel Bernard, and Easton Brown; four stepgrandchildren, Melissa Wittenburg and Megan Wittenburg, both of Waverly, Sara Wittenburg of St. Paul, Minn., and Staci Wittenburg of Cedar Falls; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Mason and Cameryn Davis; a brother, Roman (Vicki) Thome of Gilbertville; and a sister, Rita Weiden of Raymond.

Preceded in death by three brothers, Jerome in infancy, Ralph and Cletus; and three sisters, Aurelia Freet, Celine Berns and Regina Weber.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
