WATERLOO -Darrel Dean Van Ellen, 71, of Waterloo, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at NorthCrest Specialty Care.

He was born Aug. 18, 1942, in Aplington, son of Ernest and Annie Buseman Van Ellen.

A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Mr. Van Ellen worked for 35 years as a truck driver for John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring in 1998. He was a member of Waterloo UAW Local 838.

Survived by a daughter, Holly Thovson of Marshalltown; two grandchildren, Kolten (Alex Johnson) Shultz of Dougherty and Hannah (Trevor Schutte) Clark of Clinton; a great-grandchild, William “Little Fart” Schutte; two sisters, Marlene Vanderwerf of Parkersburg and Donna Miller of Conrad; his special friend, Carlyn Baugus of Dike; and family friend, Randy Wildeboer.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ronald.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, preceded by an hour of visitation. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.
