Derek Merkel, 17, of Shell Rock, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Cedar Valley Hospice, Waterloo, of melanoma.

He was born May 19, 1987, son of Dan and Chris Anderson Merkel in Cedar Falls.

Mr. Merkel was completing his junior year at Waverly-Shell Rock High School.

He was a member of the Student Senate, National Honor Society, junior class officer, W-SR orchestra and chamber choir, Human Rights club, Spanish club, Big Brothers and St. Marys Catholic Church.

Survivors include his parents; a brother, Adam of Shell Rock; two sisters, Kendra Merkel and Janelle Merkel, both of Shell Rock; maternal grandparents, Lowell and Mera Lou Anderson of Golden, Colo., and paternal grandparents, Robert and Patricia Merkel of Jesup.

Preceded in death by his great-grandparents.

Mass of Christian Burial: will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Waverly Shell Rock High School gymnasium, Waverly, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at St. Marys Catholic Church, Waverly, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture service. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Derek Merkel Scholarship Fund or the Make A Wish Foundation.
